Holl was the son of the noted engraver William Holl and the father of the painter Francis Holl. For twenty-five years he engraved the paintings in the collection of Queen Victoria. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1856 and 1883 and was elected an associate engraver of the Academy in 1883. He was also an accomplished amateur actor and acted alongside George Cruikshank, F.W. Topham and John Tenniel for the Artist’s Benevolent Fund.
