Herkomer was an influential painter, engraver, etcher, sculptor, stage-designer and filmmaker. He studied at the Munich Academy and the South Kensington Schools under Luke Fildes and Frederick Walker.Regularly exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy from 1869 onwards. He was made a full member of the Academy in 1890 and was Slade Professor of Art between 1885 and 1894. He was knighted in 1907. He was one of the first Fellows elected (31 July 1880) of Haden’s Society of Painter-Etchers. In 1883 he founded the Herkomer School of Art (1883-1904) at Bushey in Hertfordshire.Herkomer write widely on etching and his art, including various essays in The Magazine of Art. He published his autobiography in 1890 and a further biography, written by A.L. Baldry, was published in 1901.
