Hook, James Clarke

Born:1819 – Clerkenwell, London

Died:1907 – Churt, Surrey

Title of Work:

Hook studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1836 where he won the gold medal for historical painting in 1844. Travelled to Italy, Paris and Switzerland before settling in England as a genre painter of coastal scenes. A gifted painter he was also a talented etcher. He was an active member of Charles West Cope’s Etching Club until its demise in 1878 and was elected a Fellow of Haden’s Society of Painter-Etchers on 17th January 1881. His membership ceased upon his death in 1907. A regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1839-1902 he was elected ARA in 1850 and RA in 1860. His work was an early influence on James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Hook was a regular visitor to Scotland during the 1870s and it is tempting to assume Orchar made his acquaintance during these trips. Orchar had an association with the Etching Club through his friendship with John Pettie and it is possible this relationship provided an introduction to the artist.
