Israëls, Josef

Born:1824 – Groningen

Died:1911 – Scheveningen

Title of Work:

Influenced by the work of Jean-François Millet, and influential himself on the work of Van Gogh, Israëls was an important exponent of scenes of peasant realism. More commonly known as a painter he was an important figure for The Hague School and turned to etching relatively late. He created only around 30 etchings. His earliest date from around 1870 and were printed in small numbers for friends. His realist style was much admired by Scottish painters and in June 1870 Israëls and his wife visited the home of John Forbes White, the Aberdeen flour merchant and art collector. Whilst at Forbes homes he met the painters George Reid, G.P. Chalmers and Hugh Cameron and the four painters all worked on a portrait of the artist – now held in the collection of Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums.
