Description The Thames, west of London, with two fishermen in the immediate foreground. Inscription in the bottom left ‘On the Thames, F.S. Haden 1859’. Haden would use quite a wide range of papers in his etchings and it can be difficult to identify specific types. He typically used laid or wove, or India and Japan paper. Early proofs were often printed on quite thick paper – likely as this was hardwearing. Final proofs were typically on quite thin laid papers – these he called antique or verger.
