According to H.J. Hubert (The Etched Work of Jozef Israëls. Amsterdam, Scheltema En Holkema’s Boekhandel, 1909) this was ‘An etching issued about 1880 by the Illustration nouvelle, lettered proofs bear the inscription ‘Intérieur de cuisine en Hollande’ on the lower left: ‘J. Israëls pinx. Et sc.’, on the right: ‘Vvc Cadart Edit. Imp. 56 Bard Haussmann. Paris’ and above in the right upper corner the number 555. As Hubert notes ‘Even the proofs after letters are scarcer than one might expect, the Edition de luxe consisted of 25 copies on Dutch paper and 12 copies on Japanese paper only. It must be this etching that is named: ‘la Soupe’, in the Memorial Catalogue of the French and Dutch Loan collection, Edinburgh, 1886, pg.99’.

Description Israëls visited Aberdeen in 1870 and it is likely that Orchar made his acquaintance then. Orchar and William McTaggart would later visit Israëls in The Hague in 1882. It seems likely that Peeling Potatoes was gifted during this trip. The print’s dedication, ‘Josef Israëls to Mr. Orchar’ highlights the friendship that Orchar often formed with artists.
