Details Reproductive Etching. Black (very dark brown) ink on coloured paper. Signatures in remarque ‘J. MacWhirter’ and ‘David Law’. Included in remarque is a sketch of a squirrel.
Description The etching depicts three birch trees and is an impression of John MacWhirter’s 1878 painting of the same name and which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year (unknown location). Discussing a panel MacWhirter painted for Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, the critic Rudolph De Cordova noted ‘Mr MacWhirter’s admirers will delight in one of the silver birches of which – even before the year London went wild over his famous “Three Graces” – he had made so great a study.’ Rudolph de Cordova, ‘The Panels in Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s Hall,’ Strand Magazine, vol.
