Artist: Haden, Francis Seymour

Date: Before January 11, 1874, and later

State: 4/12

Size: 58.4 x 82.6 cm

Medium: Etching and Drypoint

Alternative Title(s) Calais Pier, After Turner
Details Etching with drypoint and (later impressions) mezzotint. Black ink on thick, possibly wove, paper. Reproductive etching. Inscription bottom right ‘Seymour Haden’.
Description A difficult impression to identify as Haden produced so many prints from this plate. It was a rare excursion into ‘reproductive printmaking’ for Haden. Simply put, this is a process where the etcher copies from an original work (usually a painting by another artist) rather than producing an original scene themselves. The source for the image was J.M.W. Turner’s painting Calais Pier, 1803 (National Gallery, London). Early prints were pulled by Frederick Goulding.
