Slocombe was born into a family of artists; his brothers Charles Philip (1832-1895) and Frederick (1847-1920) were all etchers. Edward regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1873 and 1904 and published his work in Hamerton’s The Portfolio and The Art Journal. He also frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1873 and 1904. In 1873 the three brothers collaborated on a set of 12 plates entitled Etchings of English Landscape the success of which probably prompted Rivers of the East Coast.
Edward was elected a Fellow of Haden’s Society of Painter-Etchers on 13th April 1882 his membership ceased on 15th January 1915. Charles Philip was elected a Fellow on 7th May 1881 his membership ceased on 20th May 1887. Frederick was also elected on 7th May 1881 his membership ceased on 13 July 1920. The Slocombe brothers regularly exhibited at the Dundee Fine Art Exhibitions. Frederick exhibited a watercolour and etchings at the 1880, 1881 and 1882 exhibitions whilst Charles Philip exhibited five prints at the 1881 exhibition and three at the 1882 exhibition. Curiously Edward didn’t exhibit any works at the Dundee exhibitions. |
