Prior to a career as a painter and etcher, Law spend twenty years working for the British Ordnance Survey in Southampton as a map engraver. He was an important figure in the early years of Haden’s Royal Society of Painter Etchers having been elected a Fellow on 7 May 1881. He was first apprenticed to George Aikman and studied at the Trustees’ Academy.  He was a regular contributor to The Portfolio between 1879 and 1902.
