Orchar owned the original painting on which this etching is based and it was shown at the 1880 Dundee Fine Art Exhibition.MacWhirter was a talented etcher in his own right and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Painter-Etchers on 7th May 1881. His membership ceased on 19th November 1889.The reason for the personal dedication likely refers to the death of Orchar’s brother Robert, a mechanical engineer, who died aged only 46 on 20th May 1881 from problems arising from cystitis and nephritis.
