Palmer, Samuel

Born:1805 – London

Died:1881 – Redhill, Surrey

Title of Work: The Rising Moon

Palmer first studied under the little known William Wate and was exhibiting at the Royal Academy by the age of fourteen and is better known as a painter. Indeed during his lifetime he only made a small number of etchings but was known to have printed as many as 600 from one plate. He produced four plates in 1850, two in 1857 and one in 1858. He started two others in 1860/61 but produced no others until 1879. Between 1879 and 1881 he produced seven more plates. Many of these were sold through the Fine Art Society. For more information see Kenneth M. Guichard, British Etchers 1850-1940. London, Robin Garton Ltd., 1977. Palmer only took up etching upon an invitation by Charles West Cope to join The Etching Club. Palmer would remain a member of the Club until his death in 1881. His work tends towards romantic and nostalgic visions of his youth.
