Waltner studied under Gérôme, Martinet and Henriquel-Dupont. In 1869 he was awarded the Prix de Rome and made his Salon debut with an etching after Rubens. Between 1875 and 1897 he worked for the Gazette des Beaux Arts and L’Art. He also submitted work for P.G. Hamerton’s influential The Portfolio in 1874 and 1886. His success came as an etcher of contemporary paintings and he exhibited at the Exposition Universelle (1878) and the Royal Academy (1880-81). For more information see Rodney K.
